Steps and Stages LLC is a private psychotherapy practice offering high quality psychotherapy solutions to children, young adults and families. Services are provided by Benjamin Steinig, LPC-ACS, LMHC and his associates.

Therapy services are provided by telehealth in NY, NJ, CT, MN, and FL.

Ben has been working with children, young adults and families in therapeutic settings since 2004. Ben completed his Masters of Science Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Touro College in 2010. After receiving his degree, Ben began practicing with multiple non-profit agencies in the New York area. Ben’s focus is to help and support children, young adults, parents and their families. Ben is a Licensed Professional Counselor in New Jersey (and Approved Clinical Supervisor) and Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York. “I aim to provided client-centered psychotherapy by getting to know you and letting you take the lead. In the therapeutic process I am interactive and direct in challenging unhealthy behaviors getting in the way of leading the life you want. I believe that building a trusting relationship with the client is key to helping the client be reflective and motivated to better their future.”

Sydney F. Cohen holds both her B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness from New York University.

During her time as an undergraduate student, Sydney volunteered as a Research Assistant at the West Interpersonal Perception Lab. Under the direction of Dr. Tessa West, The Lab study focused on Interpersonal Physiological Linkage, at NYU working on stereotype threat. This research has been published in Contemporary Educational Psychology.

Between her undergraduate and graduate studies, Sydney worked as a Psychiatric Extern at Mt. Sinai’s Comprehensive Adolescent Rehabilitation and Education Service (CARES) where she engaged in milieu therapy and co-led the LGBTQ+ therapeutic group weekly. Sydney has experience working with clients that struggle with severe psychiatric illness while working at CARES. Currently as a therapist in private practice, Sydney is working with more high-functioning client that have difficulties with mental health.

Sydney is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in NY and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in NJ.

Melodie Badillo earned her Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mental Health Counseling from Alfred University and her Master of Education in School Counseling from Lehman College. As a Mental Health Counselor, she brings a unique blend of experience working in both education and mental health with adolescents and young adults. Melodie partners with clients to explore their values, gain clarity on their wants and needs, and navigate life transitions. Using mindfulness techniques and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), she helps clients develop coping strategies and build resilience. Her collaborative, judgment-free approach creates a supportive space where clients can feel safe to share openly and work toward meaningful change.

Melodie currently holds a Limited Permit of Mental Health Counseling (MHC-LP) and is directly supervised by Ben Steinig.

 

Ben Steinberg is a Licensed Associate Counselor at Steps and Stages, practicing under the supervision of Ben Steinig, LPC. He holds a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Bellevue University and brings a diverse range of experience to his work with clients. Ben’s clinical background includes an internship at Quality Families (2021 – 2022), where he worked with adolescents and their families in their home environments. Focusing on behavioral modification, self-esteem, and family dynamics. He subsequently served as an Integration Specialist at ReYou Ketamine Treatments (2022 – 2024), gaining expertise in trauma-informed care and the integration of psychedelic experiences. Grounded in a strong therapeutic relationship, Ben’s therapeutic approach balances immediate symptom relief with deeper personal growth. He believes that meaningful change happens through both practical strategies and deeper self-understanding. He helps clients manage distressing symptoms using techniques like cognitive restructuring, mindfulness, and behavioral modification—tools that provide relief and improve daily life. At the same time, he explores the underlying emotional patterns and relationship dynamics that contribute to these struggles, helping clients gain insight and achieve lasting positive change. He is committed to ongoing education and professional development to best serve the evolving needs of his clients. 

Ben currently holds an Associate Counseling Licensure (LAC) in NJ and is directly supervised by Ben Steinig.

Phelina is a compassionate therapist with a focus on guiding individuals through self- exploration, self-discovery, and personal growth. Specializing in young adults navigating life transitions, anxiety, and depression, Phelina uses an integrative approach grounded in cognitive-behavioral theory to provide tailored strategies for overcoming uncertainty and building resilience. With a Bachelor’s in Education Studies from Spelman College and a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Hunter College, Phelina brings experience from the fields of education and social-emotional learning. This background fuels a deep commitment to helping clients understand their experiences and express their emotions in a supportive and non- judgmental space. 

Phelina currently holds a Limited Permit of Mental Health Counseling (MHC-LP) and is directly supervised by Ben Steinig.

Jonathan Weiss graduated with a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education in 2004. In August 2024, Jonathan received an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling from Alfred University. Jonathan began his clinical work in trauma assessment and counseling through Project Liberty in downtown Manhattan post 9/11. Jonathan has since gained a depth of experience through counseling diverse populations in high school, community, and clinical settings. 

To help being rapport and engagement in session, Jonathan utilizes various techniques and approaches including: psychodynamic, existential, Gestalt, and narrative therapeutic paradigms. 

Jonathan currently holds a Limited Permit of Mental Health Counseling (MHC-LP) and is directly supervised by Ben Steinig.

Melissa Banafsheha received her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University and currently holds her Mental Health Counseling Limited Permit (MHC-LP) in the state of New York. Melissa has experience working with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, mood management, and life changes, and she uses a combination of psychodynamic and person-centered approaches, as well as cognitive behavioral therapy, when working with her clients. She looks forward to providing a safe and supportive environment for her clients.

Sara is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling at Bellevue University. With a background in case management, Sara provided crucial support to individuals in need at their most vulnerable moments. Through this work,  Sara developed a profound understanding of the challenges people face, how to connect with them and support them. Sara has been working as a mentor and counselor for young adults. Sara’s journey in the field of counseling is driven by a passion for fostering growth, resilience, and well-being in those she serves.
